Commenting on the passage of today's motion allowing the merger of Lloyds TSB and HBoS, which was opposed by the Liberal Democrats, Liberal Democrat Shadow Scotland Secretary, Alistair Carmichael said:
"It is incredible that the Government is now railroading this takeover through, when there is a substantial body of opinion in Scotland asking why it is necessary.
"Gordon Brown and Alistair Darling have not explained why they are insisting on making financial support for the bank conditional on the takeover going ahead.
"Brown and Darling have a lot of explaining to do in Scotland.
"It is also regrettable that Alex Salmond, as MP for Banff and Buchan, could not be bothered to turn up in the Commons to vote. Having come late in the day to supporting HBoS as an independent bank, it is remarkable his support did not extend to voting in the Commons while the Scottish Parliament is in recess."
