Commenting on official statistics published today which predict that Scotland's prison population could reach 10,000 in ten years time, Liberal Democrat Justice spokesperson Robert Brown said:

"This is not a problem for ten years time, it is a problem now. The population is already above the safe operational capacity in many of Scotland's prisons. A solution cannot wait for ten years.

"Ministers must take action to address this problem now."
