Tavish Scott, leader of the Liberal Democrats in Scotland has written to the First Minister demanding to know what action he has taken to protect democracy in Scotland, following the arrest of Conservative MP Damian Green in Westminster.
Although counter-terrorism is reserved to Westminster, its enforcement is conducted by the police forces overseen by the SNP Government.
There has been no statement from either the Scottish Government or the Scotland Office to reassure the public that such an affront to democracy will not happen in Scotland.
In his letter, Mr Scott wrote:
"The police enjoy the freedom to act independently of political control. But, in return, there are checks and balances.
"People need to be reassured that such an affront to democracy could not take place under your watch.
"People will be anxious to learn what steps Scottish Ministers have taken in response. Whilst the different responsibilities of different levels of government need to be respected, people in Scotland will want to know what action, challenge or cooperation has been taken by Scottish Ministers.
"We are all concerned about the protection of our country and about the rule of law. But we also treasure the ability to throw a spotlight onto the actions that governments take on our behalf. It is an essential part of our democracy."
