Liberal Democrat Health spokesperson Ross Finnie MSP has called on the Scottish Government to make a New Year's resolution to improve children's health.
Setting out what Ministers' resolutions should contain, Mr Finnie said:
"Every New Year, adults across Scotland resolve to stop smoking, go on a diet or get to the gym more. This New Year, I'd like to see Ministers resolving to help improve children's health.
"In Scotland, forty children a day start smoking. Ministers should resolve to crackdown on the rogue retailers who disregard the law on selling to under 18 year olds and prevent young people accessing vending machines".
"Child obesity rates continue to soar. Ministers should resolve to clear up their confusion over promises about school PE lessons and ensure that in 2009 Scottish schoolchildren get at least an hour of physical exercise every day.
"Scotland's poor diet is legendary and so is parents' lack of understanding of the importance of five a day. Ministers should resolve to make cookery lessons available for parents and children to help show that eating healthily needn't be a chore."
"2009 should be the year to help the next generation lead healthier lives."
