Liberal Democrat Justice spokesperson Robert Brown has challenged the Scottish Government to provide detail on exactly what budgets are being cut to provide the funding boost to drug treatment services.
The Community Safety Minister has today (Tuesday) announced a 13.5 per cent boost in spending for drug treatment services. Mr Ewing said that this was made possible by a decision to minimise spending on national projects in order to free up money for frontline drug services.
Commenting, Mr Brown said:
"This is not new money for drug treatment, it is simply money which has been moved about. This announcement from the Scottish Government is lacking in detail.
"We need to know exactly which national projects are having their funding reduced in order to provide this extra money for health boards.
"Liberal Democrats want to see a twin track approach to tackling the scourge of drugs, building on existing expertise wherever possible.
"We must cut demand by cracking down on drug pushers who prey on the vulnerable and treat drug addiction as the disease it is, providing a support structure to help rehabilitate drug users back into society."
