Commenting on the announcement that there has been a 2 per cent reduction in the number of pupils claiming Educational Maintenance Allowance (EMA), Liberal Democrat Education spokesperson Margaret Smith MSP said:
"It is disappointing that at this time of economic crisis, when governments should be doing all that they can to support people from the poorest backgrounds, that fewer young people have applied for the EMAs.
"The SNP Government must look at ways of supporting Scotland's young people and establishing closer ties between schools and colleges and encouraging more people to take up the EMA."
