Commenting on official figures showing an increase in alcohol related hospital discharges, Liberal Democrat Public Health spokesperson Jamie Stone MSP said:
"The Scottish Government's response to Scotland's battle with booze has so far been more gimmicks than groundbreaking.
Jamie Stone MSP"Record numbers of people are leaving hospital after being admitted for alcohol related problems. This comes despite repeated warnings over the danger of excessive alcohol consumption. The message is just not getting through.
"In the week we discovered Scotland is one of the world's worst alcohol abusers, these figures are a stark reminder that ending Scotland's addiction to alcohol must be a key priority."
Commenting on the figure showing 65% of people leaving psychiatric hospitals after being treated for alcohol problems have been treated before, Mr Stone added:
"This figure is simply unacceptable. It will not be possible to tackle alcohol related health problems unless we can deal with them in the community after discharge from hospital.
"The Scottish Government must do more to ensure that patients who need continued help get it once they have left the confined and controlled environment of a psychiatric ward."
