Commenting on Scottish Government proposals aimed at replacing short term prison sentences with tough community sentences, outlined in the Criminal Justice and Licensing Bill, Liberal Democrat Justice spokesperson Robert Brown said:
"Liberal Democrats have long campaigned for a radical overhaul of Scotland's sentencing system. Short term prison sentences don't work, are expensive and should be replaced with tough community sentences.
"But, for this change to be successful community sentences need to be available as an immediate option to judges.
"Community sentences must be speedy, effective and efficient. My concern is that the SNP have not begun to spell out how they will make these reforms work in practice. It is absolutely vital that they do so."
