Following the latest redundancies in the knitwear industry in Hawick this week, Borders MP Michael Moore has demanded an acknowledgement from the Chancellor of the problems facing the textile industry and the need to bring forward proposals to support it when the economy is debated in the House of Commons in a few days' time.
At Business Questions in the House of Commons this morning, Mr Moore highlighted the particular challenges of the knitwear industry. Having acknowledged the problems in the construction and automotive sectors, Mr Moore believes that it is equally important that the needs of Borders textiles companies are also recognised.
He said:
"This has been another desperate week for people in Hawick and elsewhere in the Borders. I recognise the need to provide support for the financial sector, and people in construction, but in the face of this unprecedented economic downturn we need to see proper assistance for textiles as well."
