The Government's decision to force the sale of the Dunfermline Building Society is an act of financial vandalism, according to local Liberal Democrat MP Willie Rennie.
The MP for Dunfermline and West Fife, who has campaigned to rescue the building society, said:
"In one clumsy Saturday afternoon statement, the Government could be putting an end to 130 years of trusted mutual borrowing and saving tradition in Scotland.
"Chairman Jim Faulds is right to describe the statement as a scandal. There is an offer from the building society in the UK to keep the Dunfermline as an independent Scottish mutual and the Government must take up this offer.
"Protecting Scotland's biggest mutual must be worth it.
"It is Gordon Brown's building society, he must step in to save it."
