Commenting on official figures showing that a record number of free central heating systems were installed in the homes of elderly people last year, Liberal Democrat Energy spokesperson and MSP for Orkney Liam McArthur said:
"When pursuing record numbers of installations, Ministers must not sacrifice quality and leave elderly customers counting the cost of rushed jobs.
"In my own constituency there are currently no local installers involved in the scheme. The time and cost allowed for each job often makes it impossible for small, local firms in the Highlands and Islands to compete with bigger outfits from further south.
"Unfortunately, if Ministers continue to insist that the number of installations increase while the money for each installation goes down, something has to give. There is already evidence that in the Highlands and Islands it is quality and after-care service."
