Commenting on calls for a review of the open estate prison system following the escape of Brian Martin from Castle Huntly jail near Dundee, Liberal Democrat Justice spokesperson Robert Brown MSP said:
"Liberal Democrats believe that the primary role of the prison system is to ensure public safety. The open estate plays a necessary part in this, but only if it is working properly.
"We must make sure that only those people who are fit to be in the open estate system end up there.
"I believe it is right for there to be a review into what went wrong at Castle Huntly. We must ensure that lessons are learned and that the open estate system is functioning properly in Scotland."
