More changes needed to save deeply flawed crofting bill

Commenting on the announcement from the Environment Minister that plans for an occupancy requirement will be dropped from the forthcoming Crofting Bill, Liberal Democrat Rural Affairs spokesperson Liam McArthur MSP said:

"The government is in wholesale retreat over its ill-conceived plans to reform crofting.

"This is not surprising given the hostile reception the Bill has received during consultation meetings across the crofting counties in recent months.

"I am glad that the Minister has had the sense to drop her controversial proposals on occupancy requirements, but this is far from being enough to save what is still a deeply-flawed Bill.

"I hope the Minister will listen seriously to the many concerns crofters still have about her Bill and the lack of loan funding to support croft house building. If she does, there is still an opportunity to safeguard the future of this vital sector."
