The Liberal Democrats have condemned Scottish Enterprise's decision to pay its new Chief Executive £220,000.
Lena Wilson's salary is almost equal to the outgoing Chief Executive's salary, despite the Scottish Government ordering a review of the salary, in light of the 40 per cent reduction in the agency's size.
Commenting, Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Tavish Scott said:
"We have made it clear that the salaries of those at quangos should be drastically cut at a time of public expenditure cutbacks.
"I find it difficult to imagine how SNP ministers can approve of this when they will be asking for cuts and when Scottish Enterprise has almost been halved."
Liberal Democrat Finance spokesperson Jeremy Purvis MSP added:
"After pressure from me in the Finance Committee, the Scottish Government ordered a pay review of the Chief Executive but astonishingly as a result of the review, Lena Wilson is getting the same salary as Jack Perry while Scottish Enterprise is 40 per cent smaller.
"John Swinney has appointed a new Chairman on the same pay as his predecessor and now a new Chief Executive on the same basis.
"Making the body that they are responsible for 40 per cent smaller, but keeping the pay the same will be an insult to businesses that are instigating pay reductions to their staff across the board in the recession.
"SNP Ministers should be ashamed of themselves."
