Responding to the final report of the Boundary Commission for Scotland's report on Scottish Parliament Constituencies, Tweeddale, Ettrick and Lauderdale MSP Jeremy Purvis has described the findings as flawed, perverse and inconsistent. Moreover, the report entirely ignores the results of a local inquiry report by Sheriff Principal Bowen in November 2008.
The report states that a new constituency, South Midlothian, Tweeddale and Lauderdale will be established with Gorebridge and Newtongrange in the same seat as Galashiels, Peebles and Lauder. The Sheriff Principal put forward an alternative West Borders seat proposal that was far superior but was completely ignored.
Commenting, Jeremy Purvis said:
"The report of the local inquiry by the Sheriff found the Boundary Commission itself has disregarded some of its own rules and had been unclear in the presentation of information. The Sheriff's report also put forward a sensible alternative solution, that whilst was not the one I put forward on behalf of constituents, was itself far superior to the Boundary Commission's views.
"The Boundary Commission thinks this is a numbers game. It isn't. Parliamentary Constituencies should naturally fit communities. Because of the serious concerns of many in the area I am making representations to the Secretary of State for Scotland."
