George Lyon, Liberal Democrat MEP for Scotland, has welcomed moves by the European Parliament to introduce country of origin food labelling which aims to give consumers honest and accurate information about produce.
At a full vote of the European Parliament's plenary session in Strasbourg, MEPs rejected amendments put forward by Conservative MEPs that would have blocked attempts to give consumers information about where produce is sourced, not packaged.
Commenting, Mr Lyon said:
"Consumers want to have confidence that food labelling gives information about where produce is sourced, not where it is packaged.
"Too often, the small print reveals that country of origin is not what the consumer expected. This type of misleading produce information must end.
"The European Parliament has voted to give consumers accurate and honest labelling, allowing them to make informed choices about the food they buy.
"I hope that the Council of Ministers will respect Parliament's decision and push for full implantation of country of origin food labelling.
"I was surprised that my Conservative colleagues did not back the industry's view that honest labelling should be introduced."
